The site has shut down its personals section as of last Friday, after Congress passed what's called the Fight Online Sex Trafficking Act last week, which subjects websites to federal criminal and civil liability when users misuse online personals unlawfully. Amy Rouleau, who works with victims of human trafficking in Swartz Creek says the move is a good first step, but the work to prevent these horrific crimes is far from over.
She says people are still able to post personaljust in different sections of the web site. While it is hard to tell if the are actually legitimate, Rouleau says it's just another loophole traffickers can take.
The wording of the law is also concerning, particularly for companies who knowingly assist or participate or have some sort of connection to illegal sex crimes. Rouleau says while it's very difficult to get ahead of traffickers, she says her weapon is education.
